3 Areas to Improve Your Communication
Learning how to leverage reading, writing and public speaking often will boost your marketing

The ability to communicate is important to your success in this or any industry. Communication can be with one person, a group of
people or a large audience. In addition to
listening, it involves reading, writing and
speaking.
Here are tips on how to master all three.
Read, read, read
An old proverb is “knowledge is power.”
You can gain knowledge on almost any
subject by reading. Devote time every day

Reading magazines, books and online
articles about these subjects can sharpen
your sales and business skills.
Most large public libraries have a good
selection of magazines. Best, library cards
are free. Make a point to visit the library
one day each month to read appropriate
articles from new magazines and trade
journals from associated industries, especially real estate.
Your local newspaper also can provide
information on local and national trends
that will help you communicate intelligently with your clients, lenders and associates. Its articles and advertisements

the article or ad with their name in it and
mail it to them with a short note and an
advertisement from you.
Syndicated radio host Bruce Williams
once said that if you read for an hour a
night on a particular subject for four years,
you will have learned the equivalent of four-year college education. Challenge yourself
to spend at least seven hours a week, or just
1,461 hours in the next four years, pursuing
your degree in mortgage brokering.
Write right
If you don’t like writing or consider yourself
a weak writer, pick up a good book or take
a course in writing. In many cases, writing
is the only effective means to communicate
with prospective borrowers.
One way to promote yourself is to
write articles for newspapers, trade magazines and Web sites. Start with a small
article for something such as your church
bulletin or health-club newsletter. Work
up to a monthly column to newspapers
and periodicals.
Write objectively about the different
products that are available or the trends
you see. Supply the information and become the expert. If you write articles to
answer common client questions, you can
use the articles as marketing tools. Once
you write several articles, you also will
be on your way to letting the world know
that you are a mortgage expert and can
close loans.
