June is grilling and ranking time
It’s hard to believe that it’s June already. Time to grill steaks and barbecue chicken, or head out to the beach
or ballpark to enjoy a day in the sun. It also is time to celebrate the top-producing mortgage lenders in
That’s right, for the fifth straight year, Scotsman Guide has collected and verified
mortgage-loan data from lenders across America to produce lender rankings in
several categories, including overall volume, retail volume, wholesale volume
and correspondent volume. And 2016 was a banner year, with almost $2 trillion
in total origination volume industrywide, so the loan volumes of the lenders
in our Top Mortgage Lenders 2016 increased dramatically over previous years.
Turn to Page 37 to read our in-depth analysis of this year’s rankings. The rankings
begin on Page 40.
Of course, most lenders would not be able to originate loans without the funding
that comes from the secondary mortgage market. Therefore, in addition to
our rankings, we focus on providing information on this important but often
misunderstood segment of the industry. Bob Selingo of Waterstone Mortgage
Corp. provides a great overview of how the secondary mortgage market functions
on Page 53. For some insight into how the secondary market affects loan pricing,
turn to Page 82 for the article by Tammy Butler of Fair Lending Diversity Inc.
Finally, read about some of the innovations coming from Freddie Mac in our Q&A
with Freddie Mac Senior Vice President Chris Boyle on Page 22.
As usual we also cover a wide spectrum of mortgage industry topics to help inform and educate our
readers. Originators concerned about dwindling refinance volumes in 2017 might want to turn to Page 71
to read what Robert Greenberg of Patch of Land has to say about opportunities in the single-family rental
market. Ski Swiatkowski of Silver Hill Funding also discusses some simple ways for residential mortgage
companies to develop small-balance commercial business. Turn to Page 112 for Swiatkowski’s article.
Those readers interested in the current state of digital mortgages won’t want to miss the article by Mark
McElroy of Pavaso that starts on Page 107, which provides a clear and thorough look at the subject.
Next, turn to Page 78 and read what Jim Paolino of LodeStar Software Solutions has to say about the
modernization of the title and settlement industry. Then, take a look at the article by Jon Gerretsen of Trelix
on Page 140, which discusses how technology can improve transparency in the loan process.
Finally, to help originators locate and serve emerging markets, we present a trio of articles about how to
reach millennials, minorities and other first-time borrowers. First, Patty Arvielo of New American Funding
discusses marketing to millennials and Hispanics on Page 120. Then, to get a better understanding of the
issues facing borrowers from diverse cultures, read the article on Page 126 by Maria Zywiciel of NAHREP
Consulting Services. Finally, Joe Melendez of ValueInsured discusses how to deliver the lending experience
that today’s modern borrowers are seeking on Page 90.
There is even more to see in this packed issue. So, flip through the pages while you wait for the charcoal to
heat up. Just keep the magazine away from the grill.
