The world is going green again
The coming of spring at long last is a welcome relief to many. The 2017-2018 winter may not have been the
worst in recent years, but it started early with more snow cover in North America in the first weeks of November
than had been seen in more than a decade, and then continued hard in December and January, with frigid
temperatures and major snow storms that battered the East Coast, the Northwest and then the Southeast.
Now, as everyone begins crawling out from their winter slumber and people step back into the sunshine and
budding greenery, it is time once again to turn our attention to how we all fared last year. April
showers don’t just bring May flowers, they also bring tax season. Scotsman Guide can’t help
you with your taxes, but the least we can do is celebrate your 2017 business successes
while you gather your receipts and fill out your forms.
That’s right. It is time once again to honor the most productive mortgage
brokers and bankers in the nation. Top Originators 2017, our ninth consecutive
annual rankings, is the most comprehensive and intensely verified list of top-producing mortgage originators around, drawing more than 3,000 entrants
every year who want to make one of our nine different ranking lists. To read
more about this year’s cohort of entrants, turn to Page 37. To begin diving
into the lists, you can start with our Top Dollar Volume list on Page 40.
The April magazine also features our annual green practices theme. This
month, we present two articles on the topic. First, turn to Page 108 where
Susan Graham of Financial Industry Computer Systems Inc. describes how
going paperless and making energy-saving changes to your servers can save
your company money and help the environment. Then, turn to Page 22 to read our
Q&A with David Gabrielson, executive director of PACENation, an advocacy group for
Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing, which provides an innovative way to
pay for green improvements to properties.
Of course, even all of that is not enough to fill this largest-ever issue of Scotsman Guide. For an interesting
look at potential questions that retirement-minded millennials may have about mortgages, check out the article
by Scott Chase of Opes Advisors that begins on Page 85. For those originators looking to make the leap into
warehouse lending, turn to Page 113 for some tips from Jacqueline Ring of Florida Capital Bank Mortgage.
Then, for anyone looking to make the Top Originators list next year or improve upon their ranking from
this year, Leslie Delworth and John Noldan of Guaranteed Rate provide some insight into how to plan and run
fun networking events that can grow your business. Their article starts on Page 147.
There are plenty more articles inside this issue, so put your winter coat back in storage, take a break from your
taxes and read on.
In addition to our annual rankings, for the first time ever we are publishing state-based rankings, courtesy of
Ask a Lender, the unique online platform created by the team at Scotsman Guide Media to connect lenders
and borrowers directly.
Turn to Page 77 to read more about these new rankings and then check out the list on Page 80 to see which
lenders sit atop their respective states as the Best Mortgage Lenders of 2018. To see the complete rankings,
